Choosing a watch is tricky business – there are so many different options, styles, sizes and materials to take into consideration it can seem hard to not overlook something in the process. One of the things that is most often overlooked when purchasing a watch is what power source it runs on. Most people just assume that their watch will run on batteries and that one day the time will come when the battery dies and needs replaced.
The thing is, there are many, many watches these days that run on solar power – meaning they store energy from light and use it to power the device. With this type of device, your watch will truly become a one-time purchase as you will never have to replace the battery – only make sure that you recharge it in some nice sun light once in a while.
To help you out in finding the best solar powered watches we’ve taken a good luck at plenty of solar powered watches reviews and narrowed it down to these three that we would say are the best. This was determined partially by price range and materials used – but the one thing they all have in common is they are solar powered.
Solar Watch Review:
Citizen Women’s Eco-Drive
Normally we take a look at men’s watches but this particular Citizen women’s watch was too beautiful to pass up showing off! This two toned stainless steel bezel and band are gorgeous and match the diamonds around the bezel perfectly. The hands on this analog display are slender and stand out easily on the mother of pearl shaded dial.
The solar power runs a Japanese quartz movement and the window cover is made of a rather strong mineral glass. If you are looking for a watch that fits classy and casual for your wife, daughter, or yourself then this is the watch to buy! It is made with durable materials (though it is only waterproof up to 100 feet) by a high quality brand – there is no reason to doubt that this is an excellent watch.
Seiko Men’s Adventure-Solar Classic
Back to men’s watches, and we’re taking a look now at Seiko’s Adventure-Solar Classic. This is a really great watch because it boasts a classic look with a modern feel thanks to the black colouring of the dial against the brown Genuine-leather band. The casing is made of a strong stainless steel in a matte grey shade that contrasts to the dial and band beautifully.
This analog display is protected by the Hardlex glass of the window cover and runs on Japanese quartz movement. It is water resistant for up to 330 feet (100 meters) which makes this an excellent option for fun out on the water – and fun in the sun will actually help recharge your solar powered watch! This watch also features chronograph sub-dials that help with accurate time keeping, making this a perfect option anyone.
Casio Men’s G-Shock
Going in a little bit different direction we’re taking a look at the Casio G-Shock series. The other solar powered watches we’ve taken a look at today were both analog watches – so we thought it would be good to throw one digital option in there so it is displayed that there really is a watch for everyone out there. The Casio is the perfect watch for any sort of outdoor adventurer as it is durable and made of strong materials.
The band is made of a black resin material and the casing is made of stainless steel – it has a mineral glass cover that keeps it safe from scratches. It runs on Japanese quartz movement regardless of the digital display – it also features an alarm and is water resistant up to 660 feet (200 meters) which is perfect for things like scuba diving. There is also a day, date and month indicator on this watch which is a nice addition with the digital screen.
These watches are all very similar to a normal battery powered watch – and they are priced very similarly as well. However, with these watches you will make the investment one time and you will have a watch that will work for you for years to come if treated right.
All in all – if taken care of and properly charged in the sunlight (and some will recharge with indoor lighting as well as natural lighting) then you will have that watch for a long time to come. You may not ever need to buy another one (though you know you will anyway!). The whole point is if you’re paying a lot of money for something like a watch, it should be around to work for a long time to come without a lot of extra up-keep and solar powered watches are that answer here.
So if you’ve been trying to decide on a new watch, we urge you to definitely keep these watches – or at least the idea of solar powered watches – in mind when making your purchase. It can be extremely beneficial to choose a solar powered watch – and you will definitely be satisfied with your purchase when it continues to work for you time and time again!
